2005 Mapema Tempranillo

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

Tempranillo is one of my favorite grapes. Undoubtedly the one which firmly roots Spain in the world of fine wines and can travel as well. It has the strength of cabernet, can have the complexity of a syrah and a nose reminiscent of a Medoc bordeaux. The Mapema is an Argentine version and comes across as casual and serious, bold and easygoing. Nice density of fruit, harmony, tobacco leaf laced aromas and a number of impressions to debate and converse over. Matched up with a household favorite of mine, enchiladas verdes, with ease. Smoky tomatillo sauce  pulsed with roasted garlic and jalapeno baked over steamed corn tortilla filled with white cheddar cheese and zucchini; a dish which can often hit a wall against the wrong red. This is a great under $20 bottle which reflects the range of this wonderful grape and is lightly accented by the Argentine handling of it (12 months in french and american oak), which could fit in with any Spanish rendition which seem to have as many styles as names for the grape (cencibel, tinta del toro, ull de llebre, tinta del pais, etc) depending on the region in which it is cultivated. When well vinified, this grape can have as much complexity as any blend could strive for and such elegant restraint that is entirely seductive… there are an abundance of great examples, this bottle from Mendoza is only one.

fire update and harvest plans

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Sounds good. We’re bottling on the 10th - 14th, so there will be plenty to do. May be picking a bit of sauvignon blanc as well, you never know….. The winds have been on our side, so the fire seems to be headed out into no man’s land and not towards any vineyards or populated areas. Jeff says that there’s no ashes or debris anywhere, which was a worry for me as our cars were covered in ash even here in SB! Talk to you soon.

Seth-

Good to hear from you.  My plan is to be out in SBC the first week of September…my obligation to (L) is finished at the end of August.  With a good wind I should be able to make it out there by the 7th.  I will have a better idea in a couple of weeks.

How is the fire?  Have you been out to Westerly?

Hey man,

How’s things?? When are you planning on coming out? I’m starting to get a tiny bit stressed about harvest prep and bottling, and don’t want to get into another situation like you found when you arrived last year…. Just want to plan appropriately. Hope all is well.

What is Puisseguin-St-Emilion?

Answer:  One of the satellite appellations of St. Emilion in Bordeaux.  The other satellites are Lussac St. Emilion, Montagne St. Emilion, and St. George St. Emilion.  Someday I will figure out how to get the accented French letters into this post but until that day you will have to envision it :)
