Harvest at Cuatro Vientos-2008

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

We woke to Noel’s wake up call around 6.20 a.m to pick out her vineyard, Cuatro Vientos, on Saturday morning.  Peter Work, from Ampelos Cellars, pulled in around 6.45 and we were off and picking.  It was a good crew of folks represeting 3 countries, 5 states and a full age range.  The last grapes were picked for Ampelos around 9.00 and that was that.  All in, the vineyard produced less than a ton of Syrah…in a typical year the vineyard will generate up to 12 tons.  Hammered by a late spring frost the vineyard never recovered.

Sunday morning found us back in the vineyard picking for the hacienda.  It has become a rite of harvest making wine in the garage…all in, after pressing, 5.5 gallons of Viognier and 7.5 gallons of Syrah.  After making some additions, the juice was innoculated with VL3 yeast.  It is fermenting along happily in the garage.
